The Celebrate Nashville Cultural Festival (formerly Celebration of Cultures) has grown over the past two decades from 1500 attendees to 60,000+. The event is the largest cultural festival in the Southeastern US and the only event of its kind in the United States.
In commemoration of the 20th Anniversary of Celebrate Nashville, we are honored to be hosting a Naturalization Ceremony at this year’s Festival. In addition, during the week prior to the Festival there will be events that celebrate the customs of immigrant and native communities that call Nashville home. A NEW “Dirty Pages” Exhibit and Food Event
Stories around cooking, favorite meals and passed-down recipes unite and bridge cultures and communities. As part of Celebrate Nashville Cultural Festival’s 20th Anniversary week, an exhibit and reception will honor the “dirty pages” of 10 Nashville women who share well-worn recipes that help bind them to the cultures of the heritage and the paths of journey to Nashville.
This exhibit evolves from an initial Dirty Pages exhibit at the Nashville Farmers’ Market in March-April 2015 and a series of public events at the market and in collaboration with Nashville’s Conexión Américas. The project honored cookbook pages ringed with coffee stains, recipes smudged with butter or dusted with flour, a creased pieces of paper or the backs of old envelopes, pages wrinkled and folded, the faded careful script of a mother or grandmother.
This September, Dirty Pages—with the Metro Nashville Human Relations Commission and Celebrate Nashville—begins to tell the story of our city of immigrants. Through food traditions and treasured memories of shared meals—and through the marked-up, messed-up, much-loved, passed-on “dirty pages” of who we are.
Tickets include tastes of Dirty Page recipes. Proceeds support Celebrate Nashville. A cash bar also will be provided.
